Installing a Countertop Basin on your own can seem tough. With the right tools, however, it’s pretty simple, and it should take you a few hours at the most. Detailed below are seven quick and easy steps that explain how to install a countertop basin.

1. Make the Correct Measurements

A countertop basin can be installed on any flat worktop or vanity unit.

The ideal height from the bathroom floor to the rim of the wash basin is between 29 to 36 inches. It’s not necessary to replace the existing vanity unit/worktop.

Determine the right height and drill a drain hole for the basin on the top of the worktop/ countertop. The best way to adjust the height is by recessing the sit-on bowl on the top surface if needed or just letting it sit on top.

Ensure there’s enough space between the wall and the sink to install a freestanding basin tap if you intend to install one. If not, ensure the position of the spout of the wall-mounted basin tap will be at the right angle in relation to the sink.

2. Turn Off the Water Supply and Remove the Old Sink

You’ll find two valves that regulate the water supply below the washbasin. Turn them both off. Open the hot and cold water taps until the residual water in the water pipe flows out.

  • Use a pipe wrench or channel lock pliers to disconnect the supply and drain lines.
  • Disconnect the large plastic or metal nut that connects the wash basin to the drain, as well. (If you are going to reuse the same drain, note its position before you remove it.)
  • Next, detach the P-trap section. Collect the excess water that drains out in a bucket.
  • Finally, Remove the old sink by simply unscrewing the screws if it’s fixed to the wall.
  • Slide a putty knife beneath and around the basin’s perimeter to loosen the caulk. If the sink is glued to the countertop, use a hammer and chisel to free it. Scrape off the old caulk from the wall.

3. Install the New Countertop Basin Tap

Installing the basin tap is easier if you do it before fitting the new sink into place. Remove the old basin tap, and connect the threaded post of the new tap to the basin tap hole on the wall or the countertop. Ensure the spout of the tap will be on top of the basin rim after it’s fitted. Most often, a washer is included to make certain the tap sits snugly.

4. Install the New Countertop Basin

Some models provide a gasket that seals the basin in place. If a gasket has not been provided, you can apply silicone, non-hardening plumber’s putty, or use these helpful caulking tips to create a leak-proof seal.

Wait for about 24 hours until the caulking sets before you proceed to the next step. Otherwise, the basin might move slightly as you reconnect the pipes.

5. Reconnect the P-Trap and Water Inlets

If you are reusing the old drain, just fit it back into position. But if you purchased a new drain, follow the instructions for its proper installation.

Next, reattach the P-trap and plumbing lines by screwing back the nuts into place using the pipe wrench or channel lock pliers you used in step 2.

After reconnecting the water lines, make sure everything is in place.

6. Caulk the Basin and Drain

Add a layer of caulk around the outside of the bowl to prevent water leakage between the bowl and the worktop/countertop. You can skip this step if the basin has come with a gasket.

Add caulk around the drain, as well. Remove the excess caulk that oozes out. Wait for 24 hours and allow the seal to set.

7. Check Your Workmanship

After the caulking has dried, turn on the water supply. Check both the hot and cold water basin taps. Make sure there are no water leaks.

Your Countertop Basin is ready for use!
