A shower screen is an easy-to-clean accessory that safeguards your bathroom floor against stray water drops. The aesthetic appeal of a glass shower screen is unmatched, as it gives your bathroom a sleek and chic appearance.
Fitting a shower screen is the best way to prevent the entire bathroom from getting wet each time someone uses the shower. A glass shower screen will also complement the other design elements, making your bathroom look more polished and unified.

Types of Shower Screens
The three main types of shower screens are:
- Fixed shower screens
- Hinged shower screens
- Square shower screens
Fixed shower screens:
A fixed shower screen is ideal for a rectangular-shaped bath. The screen is fixed to the bathroom wall on one side and the top of the bath at the bottom.
Hinged shower screens:
A section or multiple sections of a hinged shower screen typically open outwards. Hence, this design is ideal for a spacious bathroom. In addition, a silicone profile at the base creates a waterproof seal when the glass is in a close position.
Square shower screens:
A square shower screen complements a small or corner bath to perfection. The square shape is also ideal for creating a bright, open bathroom.
How to Remove Your Old Shower Screen?
If you are replacing an existing shower screen, take care to remove the old bath screen without damaging the bath or wall tiles.
The first step is to remove the old glass shower from the metal wall channel. Then unfasten the screws that hold the channel to the wall using a drill. Remove the metal wall channel.
Next, cut away the silicone sealant holding the base of the shower screen to the top of the bath using a sealant remover tool or a sharp blade. Finally, wipe the surfaces completely dry.
Apply UniBond Silicone Sealant Remover on the old silicone surface, layering it about 3mm high. Let it stand for 3–4 hours. Wait until the thin beads of sealant soften before scraping it off with the remover tool.
Sometimes, a thin rubber strip and adhesive or plastic tape may have been used to hold the shower screen in place over the top of the bath. It’s much easier to remove this with a blade compared to removing silicone sealant.
Tools You’ll Need to Fit a Shower Screen
The right tools can make the task of fitting a shower screen that much easier. You’ll need the following general-purpose tools:
- Masking tape
- Electric drill
- Hammer
- Spirit level
- Sealant gun
- Wall plugs
- Screwdrivers
- Pencil/marker
- Tape measure
How to Fit a Shower Screen?
a. Measure and Mark the Wall Channel
Place the metal channel into position against the bathroom wall. Use a spirit level to ensure the alignment is right. Mark the screw holes with a pencil/marker. Remove the channel from the position.
b. Drill the Screw Holes
Drill the holes on the wall surface using an electric drill. (Take care to avoid nearby electrical cables and water pipes.) Next, insert the wall plugs into the holes. Hammer the plugs until they are flush with the wall.
c. Attach the Channel to the Wall
Position the channel in line with the wall plugs. Insert the screws and tighten them.
d. Fit the Shower Screen
Fixing the glass shower screen is the toughest part. If you are not careful, you can easily chip or even break the glass. So, it’s best to get help to position the glass screen and ensure it is straight.
Lift the glass and fit it into the wall channel. Adjust the seal until it aligns with the bath to ensure it is watertight. Then, follow the instructions in the product manual to fix the shower screen into the wall channel.
e. Add Sealant to the Outside Edge
Apply silicone sealant along the channel to create a watertight seal. Allow the sealant to dry for 24 hours.
